International Day For Zero Tolerance To Female Genital Mutilation

Hello, Shielded Space Blog. It has been a while since I have shared some Safeguarding thoughts and insights with you. As you may have noticed, this is our second post this year and the first one for February. Unfortunately, a bout of the flu kept me away,  so a brief pause was necessary. However, I sure am grateful to be back and excited to resume our discussions on safeguarding and promoting a secure space for all, especially on this significant occasion – the International Day for Zero Tolerance To Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). This day is marked on the 6th of February annually, so be sure to mark your calendars for the next one.

Today, on the International Day for Zero Tolerance To FGM, our focus turns to a pervasive issue that demands our attention. Female Genital Mutilation affects countless lives globally, transcending boundaries and cultures.

FGM is not merely a cultural practice; it is a violation of human rights that leaves lasting physical and psychological scars. The consequences extend far beyond immediate harm, impacting the well-being of individuals throughout their lives.

As a Safeguarding Officer and a member of the Shielded Space community, I emphasize the importance of our collective responsibility in addressing this issue. Zero tolerance for FGM requires awareness, education, and active participation in advocating for change. So, what can you do?

·      Educate and Raise Awareness: Share information about FGM to dispel myths and promote understanding.

·      Support Organisations: Contribute to or support organisations actively working towards eradicating FGM.

·      Engage in Conversations: Foster open dialogues within your community, challenging harmful cultural norms and advocating for change.

·      Empower Through Education: Encourage education for girls, as it is a powerful tool in breaking the cycle of FGM.

·      Provide Support for Survivors: Establish support networks for survivors, emphasizing their resilience and strength.

As we mark this International Day for Zero Tolerance To FGM, it is important that we renew our commitment to safeguarding and standing against practices that harm the well-being and rights of girls and women.

On a different note, Shielded Space Blog is back in action, with weekly blog posts. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and unwavering support.
