Hello Shielded Space,
Recently, I had the privilege of collaborating with a school in Nigeria while they organised their end-of-year party. This event was aimed at closing the calendar year, but it also had to be inclusive, safe, and enjoyable for all. The school's administration invited me, as they recognised the need for a comprehensive approach to safeguarding during the celebrations. During my time there, I collaborated with their Events Team, and introduced strategies that would not only bring joy to the students but also guarantee the safety and well-being of every individual, especially those who may be more vulnerable during the holiday season.
Image from pinterestThis experience led me to think about
how the needs of the vulnerable population may be overlooked during festive
celebrations. So, I decided to write out some key ways to foster a safe and
joyous holiday season for vulnerable populations, including the elderly,
children, and individuals with special needs.
1. Cultivate Community Awareness
It is important to create awareness
within our school community (staff, parents and children) about child safety,
elder care and inclusive celebrations during the holidays. You can share
information through school newsletters, school meetings, and other
communication channels, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility
in keeping everyone safe.
2. Extend a Helping Hand to the
Elderly
The holiday season can be challenging
for the elderly, especially those in our homes. So, we can encourage students
to participate in initiatives that support elderly neighbours, and family
members, such as offering assistance with holiday preparations or simply
sharing warm greetings. These small acts of kindness contribute to a sense of
community and inclusion.
3. Childproofing for a Merry and Safe
Celebration
For families with young children,
holiday decorations can present unforeseen hazards. Hence it is important to childproof
our homes, such as securing Christmas trees, removing small decorations that
could be swallowed, and keeping potentially harmful substances out of reach. It
is important to be vigilant during festive gatherings.
4. Inclusive Celebrations for Special
Needs Individuals
For those organising parties, or
events during the yuletide season, it is important to make these events
inclusive. Ensure venues are accessible, provide sensory-friendly spaces, and
communicate clearly about any planned activities that might require special
accommodations. Embrace the diversity within our community and make every
effort to create an atmosphere where everyone feels welcomed and valued.
This holiday season, let us join
hands in extending the warmth of our safeguarding efforts to every corner of
our community.
