A Heartfelt Note: A Reminder of the Impact We Can Have

This is not like my regular weekly post. Today, I want to share a touching experience that recently warmed my heart and reinforced the importance of the work I do in safeguarding.

I am literally beaming with smiles...

At work, I sometimes have to play the role of a sounding board, or counselor, so my days are filled with conversations, support, and creating a safe space for all our students to express themselves. Each interaction holds its own significance, but there are moments that stand out, like the one I want to share with you today.

Quite recently, I received a simple yet profound "Thank you" note from one of the children I have had the privilege of working with. This student had a tough time, and I spotted their struggle, and approached them about it. I listened, acted upon their concerns, and offered helpful practical steps to overcome their challenges. Fast forward to a different day, and this student walked into my office saying they would like to thank me. They thanked me verbally, handed me a little piece of paper, and walked away. I took a picture, and here it is.

It is moments like these that remind me of the impact we can have on young lives. In the hustle and bustle of our daily routines, it is easy to underestimate the power of a kind word, a listening ear, or a reassuring presence. Children, in their honesty and sincerity, often teach us valuable lessons about the significance of the connections we form.

This note serves as a reminder to me that even the smallest gestures can leave a lasting impression. It is a testament to the fact that creating a shielded space goes beyond just following protocols; it entails building trust, fostering understanding, and showing genuine care.

To the student who took the time to write this note, thank you. Your words have not only touched my heart but have also reaffirmed the importance of the work safeguarding officers do collectively as a community. It is a privilege to be a part of your journey, and I look forward to continuing to create a shielded space where every child feels heard, valued, and safe.

Until my next post, remember tha safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

  1. I stopped my daughter from using a smart phone but she is going to college next year and I don't know how to prepare her from what I have kept from her for so long. What should I do?

  2. Dear Chima,
Thank you for visiting Shielded Space Blog. Transitioning to college with limited smartphone exposure can be a challenge. I recommend having an honest open conversation with your daughter about the decision, emphasizing the importance of responsible phone usage. You can introduce her to online safety, and explain clear guidelines to her that are aimed at keeping her safe. Create a non-judgemental space with her, so that she knows that she can come to you with any concerns she may have.
In addition, you can install age-appropriate parental controls for added security.
Finally, trust that the information and education you have given her will be enough to form a firm foundation to make positive choices on her own.

    Thank you again.
